Museum Program
Kristin Herron, Director (212) 741-7848
The Museum Program supports the advancement of museums and museum service organizations by embracing the notion that clear planning and direction fosters stronger institutions, and that partnerships and collaboration can help broaden an organization's perspective and assist in better reaching its audience. The Program values projects that make the arts and culture relevant to contemporary life. Funding categories underscore these goals by encouraging museums and historic sites to be more responsive to their visitors and communities. The Program invites new organizations to submit requests in the Exhibitions, Museum Education and Interpretation, Collections Care and Research, or Institutional Development categories. Applicants are strongly advised to consult with Program staff well in advance of the March registration deadline. Definitions The definition of a museum is an organization that cares for a collection of objects, of artistic, cultural, and/or historical significance, that have been assembled for educational, research, and exhibition purposes, and that are interpreted to the public according to acceptable professional standards. The general public may explore such collections for inspiration, learning, and enjoyment through programs and exhibitions. For application purposes, the term "museum" includes historic houses and sites, and does not include organizations primarily managing living collections. Organizations meeting these definitions may apply in any Museum Program category. Organizations not meeting these definitions should consult with Museum Program staff in advance of the deadline. Eligibility Requirements Museums must be chartered by the New York State Museum Chartering Program and be in operation for a minimum of one year by the March registration deadline. Museums must provide services to the public for a minimum of 120 days per year by the registration deadline. Organizations open to the public by appointment only do not meet this requirement. Evaluative Criteria Grant requests in this Program are evaluated in accordance with the relevant agency-wide criteria. Programmatic Evaluation The Council must be able to evaluate an applicant's programmatic quality on an ongoing basis. It is the responsibility of all current and prospective applicants to inform the Program of exhibitions and other public programs at least four weeks in advance of the event date. This is required so that staff, advisory panelists, or program auditors may attend and evaluate the events. |
