  Professional Performances

Registration deadline: February 22, 2011
Application deadline: April 1, 2011

Organizations applying for or receiving General Operating or General Program Support from Dance are not eligible for funding in this category.

Professional dance companies may request support for a performance series or season (minimum of 2 full performances) in the company's home base. Applicants are expected to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to paying artists' salaries, and to have a prospective theatre space for the home season by the time of application review.

Council assistance is directed primarily towards dancers' and other artistic salaries or fees.


Application Instructions

The online application form includes the questions below. Applicants are also required to submit: online Organizational Budget for the current fiscal year, Project Budget (please use the Budget Notes section to detail income and expense items), the Events Schedule, Cultural Data Project Report and support materials.

Please note that your request amount should not exceed 50% of the total Project Budget.

First-time applicants are required to call staff before the registration deadline.


Application Narrative Questions

Artistic/Programmatic

1. Organizational Overview
Provide a brief summary of the Artistic Director's background and the history of the company.

2. Program Overview
Describe the proposed performance season, including theatre venue, timeframe, number of performances, and planned repertory. Indicate if the engagement will be self-produced or presented. Note whether the program builds on previous activity or marks a new direction.

3. Performance Season Update
For the company's last home season, highlight significant repertory additions (premieres and major revivals), collaborative artists involved, commissioned scores or live musical accompaniment, and anything else of artistic note.

4. Touring Update
Give an overview of the company's touring activity in the last fiscal year and describe any significant changes or developments in your other artistic programs.

Managerial/Fiscal

5. Artistic Salaries
Detail the number of company dancers, rehearsal/performance salary structure and the number of weeks of work in the current year and request year. Give salaries by whichever system is employed (rehearsal hour, performance week, per performance, etc.)

6. Administrative Staffing
Indicate who is in charge of general management, fundraising, board development, budgeting, and finances. Note if there have been any changes of key staff members.

7. Technology
For technology-based presentations, describe the technical capacity and staff support.

8. Governance
Describe the size, structure and involvement of your board.

9. Finances
The Council may only support up to 50% of any project's total cost. Describe plans, projects and activities for meeting current and future expenses.

Service to the Public

10. Audience Development
In what ways does the organization interpret artists' work for the public (i.e. performance program notes, lecture demonstrations, pre- or post-performance discussions, etc.)?

11. Marketing
Describe the marketing efforts and intended audience, including print and non-print media, ticket pricing, subscription plans, related events, and partnerships.

12. Online Resources
How do you use the Internet and social media to better serve the public?

Please list all of the support materials and/or work samples you are submitting. These materials are critical to your application's assessment.

NYSCA encourages the submission of Web-based Work Samples and Support Material whenever possible.

1. Promotional flyers and performance programs from the last 2 home seasons.

2. Provide CDs, DVDs or URL for reviewing excerpts from a recent performance. If providing a CD or DVD, include one or two cued work samples totaling no more than 5 minutes. See Instructions for Work Samples & Support Materials for providing support materials on CDs, DVDs or URL.
