Institutional Development offers support to help organizations in the design, planning, and historic preservation fields build a professional staff and achieve fiscal and administrative stability. The Council supports the salary of one senior design, planning, or historic preservation professional with whom the organization's growth and development would be enhanced. This category is intended to serve emerging architecture, planning, design and historic preservation institutions not yet ready to receive General Operating Support from the Program.

Funding of up to $10,000 is awarded on a single-year basis for up to three years. The Program awards no more than 50% of the salary.


Eligibility Criteria

The organization's central mission is to provide programs and/or services in the design, planning, or historic preservation fields
 
The organization has received at least two years of project funding from this Program

Requests for personnel for site-specific restoration projects are not eligible

Application Instructions

Organizations interested in applying for Institutional Development are strongly advised to consult with Program staff well in advance of the registration deadline.

Artistic/Programmatic

1. Program Overview
Describe the organization's programs and/or services planned for the coming year, highlighting new or expanded activities and intended audiences. 

2. Job Description
What is the job description for this position?

3. Search Process
Describe the search process the organization undertook (or plans to undertake) to fill this key staff position. What are the required qualifications and/or background? 

Managerial/Fiscal

4. Finances 
Describe how the organization will raise the balance of the funds for the position. Describe the plan to retain the position beyond the grant.

5. Organizational Development
Describe the involvement and role of the Board in the development of this position.  Did a recent planning process inform the creation of this position?  If so, how? 

Service to the Public

6. Audience
Who are the audiences and/or communities served by your organization?  How will this position interact with and/or serve your constituency?

7. Membership
If your organization has members, how many?

8. Context
What other organizations are providing similar or complementary architecture, planning, design, or historic preservation programs and/or services in your community? Are you working in partnership with any of these organizations?


Support Materials

Support materials must be postmarked or hand-delivered to the Program by the application deadline. If you want support materials returned, provide a self-addressed stamped envelope.

1. Resumé of the key staff person if that position has already been filled.

2. Up to 15 images on a CD-ROM with a brief script illustrating the organization's program's and/or services.

3. Representative samples of recent newsletters, membership brochures, or other published material.

4. Long-range or strategic plan.
