  Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is this program now called Architecture + Design?  What happened to Planning?

A: The Design and Planning Studies category can now be located under "Facilities" where all building-related requests are grouped. It is exempt from the Council's 2-request limit.

Architecture + Design funding supports non-profit organizations and programming focused on the design arts including: architecture, landscape architecture, fashion, furniture, graphic, industrial and interior design.

Q: Why can't I find the Exhibitions / Publications / Workshops / Conferences / Salary Support / Services to the Field category anymore?! Does that mean you are not offering support in those areas?

A: We have consolidated all of those support areas into a single category - Project Support. You can absolutely still apply for any of those project areas! Importantly, this single category offers you more flexibility in applying to Architecture + Design. If your project combines any of the areas above, or meets the goals of Architecture + Design in another form, you can now apply in this open category. As always, please contact staff with any specific questions about this.

Q: The questions in the Project Support category are rather general. How will I best present my project without more specific information?

A: Please scroll to the bottomYou will see guidance on the kinds of specific questions that panelists will want to see addressed in your narrative.  You should incorporate specific information into your answers to the more general questions.

Q: How difficult is it to receive support in the Independent Projects category? Do you receive a lot of applications in this category?

A: Very few applications are funded in this category - it is extremely competitive. On average, less than 15% of the applications are successful. Last year there were 75 completed applications with 10 receiving support.

Q: Can I apply for an Independent Projects request when the project itself will occur outside of New York State?

A: The Panel reviews all requests based on NYSCA's three main criteria. In terms of "Service to the Public" a project not available to New York State residents or visitors would not fare well in our rating system as we are a New York State agency.

Q: My organization receives Operating Support from Architecture + Design. Why can't we also apply for a Services to the Field request?

A: NYSCA policy remains that organizations receiving Operating Support may not also submit a project request to the discipline in which they are receiving that unrestricted support.  However, you would be welcome to include discussion of the project in your Operating Support request, as part of making your case for funding for the range of programs and services you provide.

Q: I need support for a Building Condition Assessment. I am not sure where to apply for that?

A: The Preservation League of New York State manages our Technical Assistance Grants, which include building conditions assessments.  You can learn about these grants at www.preservenys.org.

Q: I clicked on the "Supplemental Forms" link. Which ones are required for Architecture, Planning and Design?"

A: None. These forms are for other disciplines. Please review the guidelines for required Support Materials for Architecture + Design.
